Sitka is the 6th largest port in the United States for the value of its seafood harvest and ranks 19th by volume.

During the Russian-American era in the early nineteenth century Sitka was the most developed industrial outpost on the West Coast of North America with an active shipyard.  Dozens of ships, some over one hundred feet long, were built here.  European and American ships plying the West Coast came to Sitka to get repairs done.
