Education
The Sitka School District encompasses grades kindergarten through 12th grade. It includes two elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools. An elected five-member School Board governs the school district. The Board does not have taxing authority but derives its operating funds from the State of Alaska and the City of Sitka. A superintendent of schools manages the school district.

In addition, the State of Alaska operates Mt. Edgecumbe High School, a 330-student boarding school for students from many villages throughout Alaska. The school has an enrollment of 411 students in school year 2006-2007.
The performance of Sitka's public school students on standardized tests is generally higher than state averages. Standard Base Assessment results for Sitka 3rd, 6th, and 8th graders exceeded the Alaska avarage in all three disciplines -- reading, writing, and math. High School Graduation Qualifying exam scores for Sitka 10th graders (the first year the test is given) were above Alaska averages for writing, math and reading.
Higher Education
Sitka hosts the University of Alaska Southeast - Sitka Campus (UAS Sitka) which has a total enrollment of 1,253 both full and part time for Spring 2007.
