Community and Recreation

If an important quality of life criterion for you is access to recreational opportunities, then perhaps Sitka can meet that expectation. You can get in your boat and drive to the next cove or bay to see what is there. If hunting or hiking is your game, then again Sitka can provide that virtually outside your door. If going to a metropolitan area for a weekend is how you like to recreate, Alaska Airlines has frequent specials or you can put your car on the ferry and explore the other communities of Southeast Alaska like Juneau, Ketchikan or Skagway.

You probably would not want to sunbath on our ocean beaches but you could run around in shorts and shirtsleeves in the summer and get in a boat and spend a month of Sundays exploring hundreds of islands where the whales feed and sea otters play. We also don't worry about putting up with 90-degree heat in August or September because our summer high rarely reaches 80 degrees. For that matter, you don't have to pull out the heavy parka in January because we don't get the deep cold northern Alaska is famous for. If you want to fish for that big 10 pound stripper lake-bass you've always wanted to catch, you will only find salmon or halibut or cod that would make that 10-pound bass look like a fingerling (15, 20, 30 or even 50 lbs is our norm).
