Education

Goal

Expand educational opportunities, attract new educational services that are not provided by existing institutions in Sitka, and develop a regional education hub.

Actions

  1. Work with UAS, the City, and community groups.
  2. Consider: marine and fisheries science, nursing and geriatric health care, marine industry (ie California Maritime Academy), climate studies…
  3. Optimize outcome of Sheldon Jackson College campus redevelopment.
    • Promote the availability of SJC campus to entities that may be interested in taking over the property.
    • Assist with developing a vision for the core campus that benefits Sitka.
    • Promote Sheldon Jackson Trustee-community dialogue.
    • Pursue potential for a Job Corps center.
  4. Expand vocational training. Provide support in the development of the Southeast Alaska Academic and Vocational Institute as a component of educational and economical development for Sitka.

Status

A variety of old ideas are being discussed again, but no solid solution has been found for the mostly vacant SJ campus. The University of Dubuque was not able to produce a proposal that was mutually beneficial to Sitka and UD decided to end negotiations. Sheldon Jackson College property is NOT owned or controlled by the City of Sitka. The Sitka Sound Science Center, Alaska State Troopers, University of Alaska Southeast, SEARHC, and other entities have all been approached regarding potential use of the campus. The Sitka Fine Arts Camp and Sitka Summer Music Festival have both expressed interested in using a portion of the campus. However no single organization has come forward with the financial ability to take over the entire core campus and manage the property.
