Increase Sitka’s hydroelectric capacity and other renewable energy generation.
Actions
- Support Blue Lake expansion and development of Takatz Lake hydro.
- Advocate for recognition of alpine style hydroelectric systems as renewable energy for Federal funding purposes.
- Support development of the Japonski Island renewable energy project.
- Explore Biofuels potential.
- Work with JEDC representative on wood utilization project.
- Research utilization of waste materials such as cardboard. “Bio-Brick” production. tested at SCIP in winter of 2008 with positive results.
- Research uses of fish waste.
- Explore wind power potential.
- Research opportunities with AEA.
Status
SEDA is participating in the Sitka Energy Partnership to develop a strategic energy plan for Sitka. The Executive Director attended the 2009 Business of Clean Energy in Alaska conference in Anchorage. Research is being done and discussions are taking place on a number of potential projects related to the above action list. Grant funding opportunities for renewable energy projects are being tracked.
